Configuring micromax MMX 300G airtel 3g Data card in Ubuntu

This is still a work in progress but I have achieved higher success than my peers on the internet so I am posting my results here :

First of all as you might have noticed this device has two modes one is the storage device mode where it acts like a usb CDROM and the other is the modem mode. the Storage mode is the default mode.

To make this device work the first obvious thing to do would be to switch its usb mode.

First just for the heck of it look at the output of lsusb

one of the lines would go like 0x1c9e:0xf000

right this is the vendor:productid for storage mode of this modem

the vendorid:productid for modem mode is 0x1c9e:0x9603

get this file
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/usb_modeswitch-1.0.2.tar.bz2

First of all you need to extract it enter the extracted folder

copy the file usb_modeswitch to /usr/bin

$ sudo cp usb_modeswitch /usr/bin/

copy usb_modeswitch.conf to /etc folder

$ sudo cp usb_modeswitc.conf /etc/

open up usb_modeswitch.conf and add the following lines at the end

DefaultVendor = 0x1c9e
DefaultProduct = 0xf000

TargetVendor = 0x1c9e
TargetProduct = 0x9603

MessageEndpoint=0x01

Thats the correct config for Micromax MMX 300G modem.

run the command

$ sudo /usr/bin/usb_modeswitch

run lsusb again

voila: the modem mode is on. notice the new productid showing in the lsusb output

Wrap up by mounting the modem:

$ modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1c9e product=0x9603

Firstly, I think from win32 ... i see that the prodID seems to have changed to the following ... product=0x9605 .... so what are the changes required for getting this to work ...

after installing wvdial + usb_switchmodes ... i can never get to see /dev/ttyUSB0 device being created ?

Pse enter su in terminal first and enter. it would ask for password, enter ur admin / superuser password. Then try to edit or else type sudo nano -w /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf
Anyone who has sucessfully configured wvdial file for Airtel SIM on Micromax MMX 300G pse do fwd the settings pse.

I did the following to use airtel 3G micromax usb modem on my Toshiba laptop with Sabayon 5 OS:-
(a) installed usb_modeswitch and configured as per details by Shantanu. My modem was rightly detected as modem (& not as disk). On running usb_modeswitch i got the following message

(b) installed gnome-ppp, configured the same and finsihed with Make.
(c) Then when i ran wvdial, it says the following
-->WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
-->Cannot open /dev/tty/USB0: No such file or directory
-->Cannot open /dev/tty/USB0: No such file or directory
-->Cannot open /dev/tty/USB0: No such file or directory

When i checked the dev directory for tty dir couldnt find the same.
Am stuck here!! Can someone help out?

Sir installing software of micromax .when we click on setting then we go in connection profile where we need to fill apn and dialing no.

Sir, I want to use Airtel Sim Card in micromax please tell about it settings like APN & Dialing Number.

after the usb_modeswitch your modem switches from CD mode to a modem mode so you wont see the disk icon anymore and you wont be able to browse it since it is not in portable CD Drive mode anymore, but you will now be able to connect using the wvdial after you have configured it. do make sure your kernel is updated.
check output of lsusb to see the new device after you run usb_modeswitch

i am using it past 2 months, it is good but could be make more better.
sometimes speed is fast and rarely slow also.
all totally i liked it.
