Compiz adds some cool effects to the ubuntu desktop.  while compiz itself is installed by default on the ubuntu its configuration manager isn't. To activate compiz. right click over your desktop and choose "Change Desktop Background". Go to tab labeled visual effects and select "extra". compiz is now enabled.

To install settings manager launch xtern or gnome nautilus and type into the console:

$sudo  apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

On the dashboard on top goto system-> preferences->compizconfig settings manager.

viola!! the compiz configuration app will open up
